Sierra Club Florida Statement on AG Bondi’s Move to Block Implementation of the EPA’s Clean Power Plan
TALLAHASSEE, FLA — August 17, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — Late yesterday, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi joined 14 other state attorneys general seeking to block the EPA’s Clean Power Plan. Finalized earlier this month by our Environmental Protection Agency, the Clean Power Plan will reduce carbon pollution from power plants.
In response, Sierra Club’s Senior Campaign Representative Kelly Martin issued the following statement:
“By asking the courts to halt implementation of the Clean Power Plan, AG Pam Bondi is siding with big polluters over the health and well-being of communities across the state. She should be standing up for the health of Florida’s people and the economic benefits the CPP will provide to our state instead of fighting clean energy measures and important pollution safeguards.
“During the Florida Cabinet’s recent confirmation hearing for Secretary Jon Steverson to head the Department of Environmental Protection, Steverson named the Clean Power Plan implementation among his agency’s top priorities. Now the AG seeks to oppose it. Bondi’s action is inconsistent with the recent comments from the head of the agency responsible for protecting Florida’s air quality.
“The Clean Power Plan will keep Florida families healthy and safe by reducing dangerous carbon pollution from power plants for the first time ever. These protections will help clean up the air, reduce pollution-related respiratory illnesses, and curb the worst effects of climate disruption.
“From Miami to the Everglades to the Panhandle, our cities and our coasts will be protected and our communities will be healthier with a strong, effective, Florida-made clean power plan.”
