Former Tampa Funeral Home Owners Arrested for Fraud
The Department of Financial Services, Division of Insurance Fraud (DIF) today announced the recent arrest of two former funeral home owners from the Tampa area, Julio Gonzalez-Roel and Lucia Gonzalez-Roel. This year-long investigation which included the combined efforts of DFS’s Division of Agents and Agency Services and the Division of Funeral, Cemetery and Consumer Services revealed the couple allegedly concocted a scheme by which they sold pre-need funeral contracts to consumers and then stole the money they collected on those contracts rather than placing the funds into a pre-need trust account as Florida law mandates

Bilirakis, Jolly Move to Protect Florida Homeowners from Soaring Flood Insurance Rates
Congressman Gus Bilirakis (FL-12) and Congressman David Jolly (FL-13) have introduced legislation to protect Florida homeowners from impending increases in flood insurance rates. The Flood Insurance Rate Increase Suspension Act (H.R. 4866), which was filed on March 24 by the bay area Republicans, would delay any increase in flood insurance premium rates for certain properties for 12 months.

FinCEN Takes Aim at Real Estate Secrecy in Manhattan and Miami
The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) today issued Geographic Targeting Orders (GTO) that will temporarily require certain U.S. title insurance companies to identify the natural persons behind companies used to pay “all cash” for high-end residential real estate in the Borough of Manhattan in New York City, New York, and Miami-Dade County, Florida. FinCEN is concerned that all-cash purchases – i.e., those without bank financing – may be conducted by individuals attempting to hide their assets and identity by purchasing residential properties through limited liability companies or other opaque structures.

The inventory of Orlando homes available for purchase took another tumble in February, slowing year-over-year sales by 5 percent and driving a double digit increase in median price. The overall median price (all sales types and all home types combined) for the month of February 2016 is $185,000, a 12.19 percent jump compared to the $164,900 median price in February 2015. The median price is up 2.78 percent compared to the January 2016 median of $180,000
