Brevard County Awarded $8,999,760 HUD Grant for Permanent Housing for Homeless

National -

Brevard County, Florida, has been awarded $8,999,760 in federal funding to create new permanent housing for people experiencing homelessness, Rep. Mike Haridopolos (R-FL) announced. The money comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Continuum of Care Builds program.

The award follows a two-year effort by the Brevard Homeless Coalition and local partners. Haridopolos said he supported the coalition’s application, provided a letter of support and worked directly with HUD to move the project forward.

Amber Carroll, executive director of the Brevard Homeless Coalition, said it took more than two years and three applications to secure the funding for permanent supportive housing. She said the money will help Carrfour Supportive Housing and the Continuum of Care expand housing opportunities in Titusville and Melbourne.

Haridopolos, who is Whip of the House Financial Services Committee, also pointed to his role in helping lead passage of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, a bipartisan law aimed at increasing housing supply, cutting regulatory barriers and expanding pathways to homeownership.

Why it matters

The grant will fund new permanent supportive housing in two Brevard County cities. Local housing providers and service agencies can look to it as an example of how Continuum of Care Builds money reaches communities.
