TAVARES – June 3, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — The University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension in Lake County is offering its popular two-hour long course “Chicken University” on Thursday, June 11 from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Lake County Agricultural Center, located at 1951 Woodlea Road in Tavares. Topics to be covered include poultry anatomy and biology, housing, egg production, predator protection and egg handling.
“Urban chicken keeping is a hot topic in many parts of the country, including Central Florida,” said Livestock and Natural Resources Agent II Megan Brew, who will be teaching the class. “Small scale chicken farming can be an excellent way to provide a safe and wholesome food for your family, but in order to be successful, chicken keepers must develop a basic understanding of poultry biology and husbandry. Thanks in part to new legislation which allows landowners in certain areas to manage small numbers of hens; new and potential farmers are flocking to their county Extension offices looking for help.”
Space in the class is limited and pre-registration online is required by visiting https://uflakechickenuniversity.eventbrite.com. The cost to participate is $5, which includes written material.
