WHO/WHAT: | Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida “Wall Raising” for new Men’s Service Center |
WHEN/WHERE: | Tuesday, August 7, 2012 8:30 a.m. (approximate start) until 3:00 p.m. Coalition main campus 639 West Central Boulevard Orlando, FL 32801 (Note: Parking for several media vehicles on Coalition campus; others along Terry Ave. and Central Blvd.) |
WHY/HOW: | The new Men’s Service Center (MSC) will be rising before our eyes. A mammoth crane will hoist the first of 42 “Tilt Walls,” or sandwiched slabs of concrete, into place. Together, the panels will form the exterior walls of the 33,000 sq. ft. residential facility for homeless men. They range in size from 4 ft x 20 ft to 30 ft x 32 ft and the heaviest is 85 tons! The entire process will take several days.
Because the site space is tight, contractor APM Construction Corporation had to improvise on construction techniques. In mid-May, they began creating the “Tilt Wall” panels on the horizontal, stacking them upon each other three high until all were poured and ready to hoist. That monumental moment begins Tuesday! |
INTERVIEW OPPORTUNITIES: | Homeless men who are succeeding despite the odds Brent Trotter, Coalition President/CEO Jim Ploska, President, APM Construction |
