Lake County Water Safety Team wins national

TAVARES – (RealEstateRama) — The Lake County Water Safety Team received the National Water Safety Congress Award of Merit, given on March 8 at the International Boating & Water Safety Summit in San Diego, California. Team member William S. Griswold, of Mount Dora, presented the award during the April 14 Lake County Water Safety Advisory Committee’s quarterly meeting.

The award recognizes outstanding teamwork by agencies facilitating water safety and drowning prevention.

The Lake County Water Safety Team began as a countywide campaign in 2011 to promote water safety, coinciding with National Safe Boating Week in May. Partners included representatives from county, municipal, public safety, schools, child welfare, health and private sector groups. Water Safety Day events consisted of mock drowning rescues, life jacket fittings, CPR demonstrations, door prizes, safety video presentations, swimming lessons and registrations, and more.

“This is a tremendous example of groups with similar goals coming together and putting on very successful community events,” said Griswold. “Hundreds of children have participated in these events and learned about the importance of water safety.”
This year, Water Safety Day events will be held at various locations throughout the month beginning May 7.

The Lake County Water Safety Advisory Committee was formed in 2015 out of the success of the Water Safety Team. The Committee advises the Board of County Commissioners on issues related to water safety and drowning prevention. To find out more, visit lakecountyfl.gov keyword: water safety.
