Lake County seeks citizens to serve on the Value Adjustment Board

TAVARES – (RealEstateRama) — The Lake County Board of County Commissioners has an immediate opening for citizens to serve on the county’s Value Adjustment Board (VAB), an independent board which hears property owners’ appeals regarding property tax issues. To serve on this board, applicants must own homestead property in Lake County, and cannot work for a taxing authority nor as a tax agent before any Value Adjustment Board.

The VAB provides a forum for property owners to appeal their property value or denial of an exemption, classification or tax deferral. Hearings are conducted by qualified special magistrates who make recommendations to the VAB to determine whether property is properly assessed or exemptions and classifications have been properly administered by the Property Appraiser in accordance with Florida statutes and administrative rules.

The VAB has no jurisdiction or control over taxes or tax rates established by taxing authorities. Its primary function is to hear evidence as to whether or not properties, petitioned for their consideration, are assessed at their just market value and/or whether tax exemptions or agricultural classifications should be approved.

VAB hearings are normally held at the Lake County Administration Building, located at 315 W. Main St. in Tavares. Meeting schedules and times can vary depending on the amount of petitions received.
