Lake County’s Extension Service hosts public classes about hydroponics and pruning roses
TAVARES – February 5, 2016 – (RealEstateRama) — The University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension in Lake County is offering two educational horticulture classes in February.
The “Pruning Roses” class will be hosted at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 9 and the “Homeowner Hydroponics” presentation will be offered at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20, both at the Lake County Extension Center and Discovery Gardens, located at 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares.
Participants will learn pruning techniques used for hybrid tea and commonly grown roses in the home landscape. Sumter County Master Gardener and rosarian Ed Bull will present a demonstration in the Rose Garden at Discovery Gardens. This class is free, but space is limited. Residential Horticulture Agent Brooke Moffis and UF/IFAS Lake County Master Gardeners will lead the “Homeowner Hydroponics” class as part of the “Saturday in the Garden” speaker series. Moffis will deliver a 45-minute presentation on hydroponic basics, followed by demonstration of three different home hydroponic systems. Master Gardeners will offer hands-on tutorials, with Ruth Samuels highlighting a tower system, Carol Morris showcasing a vertical stacking system and Bob Szulwach explaining the floating raft hydroponics system.
To guarantee a seat and materials for the hydroponics class, registration is required by 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 19. The fee is $5 by debit or credit card at http://bit.ly/1VCHhFE. Pre-registration by cash or check is accepted at the Lake County Extension Center during normal business hours.
