House of Representatives Stands Up For U.S. Citizens and Defeats Lee Amendment That Would Have Condoned Cuban Trafficking in Confiscated American Property

“The House must continue to stand with American citizens, protect their property rights, and work to prevent the Cuban regime from using illegally confiscated properties for their own commercial benefit.”

Washington, DC – June 5, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa, made the following statement regarding the defeat of the Lee Amendment to the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, which would have repealed language that prohibits any new regularly scheduled flights or cruises to Cuba if they use illegally confiscated American property. The Lee Amendment was defeated by a margin of 247 – 176.

Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

“The United States should not trample on the property rights of Americans whose properties were illegally stolen by the Castro regime. By endorsing any sort of confiscation without recourse, it would only embolden other regimes like in Maduro’s Venezuela. In Cuba, there is no rule of law and no court that will grant American citizens a fair hearing. We are their only forum of redress for this crime. The House must continue to stand with American citizens, protect their property rights, and work to prevent the Cuban regime from using illegally confiscated properties for their own commercial benefit.”
