TAVARES, FL – October 15, 2008 – (RealEstateRama) — While the 60 exhibitors at the free Lake County Green Fair, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 1, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Wooton Park in Tavares, will share with fairgoers a wealth of environmental information, the Fair will also provide an opportunity to dispose of some unwanted household items.
Individuals that bring mercury-containing thermometers and thermostats to the Green Fair will receive gift cards, courtesy of Covanta Energy. Thermostats will get a $10 gift card and thermometers will receive a $5 gift card. In addition, the first 10 individuals to drop off a mercury-containing thermostat will receive a new digital thermostat. Covanta is also giving away 350 light-switch covers with mercury-free wall thermometers.
The Lake County Department of Environmental Utilities will supply recycling bins for fairgoers to use. Items accepted for recycling include newspapers, magazines, plastic beverage containers, clear, brown and green glass, aluminum beverage cans, steel cans and household batteries.
Lake County’s Household Hazardous Waste Mobile Unit will give individuals a convenient opportunity to dispose of household hazardous waste. Items accepted by the mobile unit include:
• Poisons, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, fertilizers and insecticides
• Used motor oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, gasoline, diesel fuel, antifreeze, Freon, kerosene, one-pound propane bottles and automobile batteries
• Paint, paint thinners, paint strippers and wood preservatives
• Aerosols cans and fire extinguishers
• Rechargeable household batteries including button batteries
• Swimming pool and spa chemicals
• Fluorescent light bulbs, thermostat switches, smoke detectors and other mercury-containing devices
• Household chemicals and cleaners
The Department’s Paint Reuse and Redistribution Program will provide fairgoers access to unwanted and unused latex paint. While colors are limited and subject to availability, the paint is free. The Paint Reuse and Redistribution Program helps to reduce the amount of latex paint that is typically sent to the landfill as waste by recycling the paint and repackaging it for reuse.
