Lake County partners promote safe swimming during Water Safety Month
TAVARES – April 21, 2016 – (RealEstateRama) — Lake County’s Water Safety Advisory Committee, government agencies and private partners are hosting Water Safety Month in May. The events will offer free swimming and CPR demonstrations, life vest education, mock drowning exercises, swimming lesson registration, open swimming, exhibits and more.
May 7 – 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Umatilla City Pool, 16 Lone Star St., Umatilla
May 7 – 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Golden Triangle YMCA, 1465 David Walker Drive, Tavares
May 14 – 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Waterfront Park (Sponsored by Swimming for Life), 100 3rd St., Clermont
May 21 – 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Venetian Gardens, Dozier Circle, Leesburg
May 21 – 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Gardenia Park, 201 W. Berckman St., Fruitland Park
Each day in the U.S., 10 people die from drowning and two of those are children under the age of 14, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.
Florida has the highest drowning rate in the nation for children under the age of 14, which is why I am proud Lake County is working to keep its citizens safe by hosting water safety events for the fifth consecutive year,” said Lake County Board of County Commissioners Chairman Sean Parks, who spearheaded the creation of the Water Safety Advisory Committee.
The committee meets quarterly and advises the Board of County Commissioners on issues related to water safety and drowning prevention.
Water Safety Month is hosted by the Water Safety Advisory Committee, in partnership with the Lake County Board of County Commissioners, Lake County Schools, Lake EMS, Florida Department of Health in Lake County, Swimming for Life, Coast Guard Auxiliary, Department of Children and Families, Golden Triangle YMCA, and the cities of Tavares, Umatilla, Clermont, Leesburg and Fruitland Park.
