WASHINGTON, D.C. – April 12, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — Broward County Homeless Initiative Partnership has received a grant totaling more than $8 million to fund 17 local projects from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

In January 2013, Broward County conducted a countywide sheltered and unsheltered homeless “Point-in-Time Count” and is finalizing the data for a report later this month. Since that time, however, the County has actively sought to maintain and secure resources to address this growing need.

HUD recently announced the 2012 HUD Homeless Continuum of Care awards, including more than $1.5 billion in awards for the Homeless Continuum of Care Program nationwide.

Broward County is the recipient of 17 project grants totaling $8.9 million. This award funds supportive services; transitional, permanent supportive housing through HUD’s Permanent Supportive Housing and Shelter Plus Care Programs; and helps fulfill goals set out in the Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness. The Ten Year Plan was initially approved by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners in December 2005, and has since been endorsed by nine cities, the United Way of Broward County, Coordinating Council of Broward, Florida Department of Children and Families, businesses and others.

Of the 17 HUD awards, 12 permanent supportive housing projects fund 684 beds, and five transitional housing projects fund 428 beds. Most importantly, these renewal funds created 48 new permanent beds with existing funding. These 17 programs will serve homeless adult and youth clients, including:

  • individuals, families, veterans
  • those with mental, emotional and physical disabilities
  • substance abuse disorders
  • mothers with children
  • pregnant women
  • those who are “chronically” homeless and who have co-occurring disorders

Overall the HUD award funds housing and/or services in support of 1,160 beds in Broward County for eligible homeless clients.
