Representative Gwen Graham spoke at the North Florida Homeless Veterans Stand Down event today, and announced the Department of Veterans Affairs is expanding eligibility for the Veterans Choice Program, effective immediately.
“On any given night, nearly 50,000 veterans sleep in homeless shelters or on the streets. Furthermore, approximately 260,000 veterans use homeless shelters or other services during the course of a year. These courageous men and women have stood up in defense of our freedom, and we owe them more than our gratitude – we owe them our firm commitment to ensure that they receive the care and benefits they earned through their service.
Attorney General Pam Bondi’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit announced the arrests of four individuals for allegedly recruiting the homeless to bilk Medicaid out of at least $215,000. According to the investigation, Christina Benson, owner of Tranquility Healthcare Solutions in Orlando, billed Medicaid for services for homeless men and women who were recruited by her associates to pose as patients.
Today, Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL), Co-Founder and Co-Chairman of the Congressional Homelessness Caucus, introduced the Services for Ending Long-Term Homelessness Act. This bill would establish a grant program to provide permanent supportive housing for chronically homeless individuals and families whose needs are not addressed by traditional affordable housing. ORLANDO, FL - August 6, 2012 - (RealEstateRama) -- Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida has launched the Journey Home Campaign, a $12 million major gifts and endowment fundraising initiative to ensure the strength and viability of the Coalition for years to come. This is the largest-ever fundraising endeavor for the 501 (c)(3) nonprofit, which benefits the community by providing housing and supportive services to more than 750 homeless men, women and children every day...and about 4,000 individuals each year. Fifty percent - or $6 million - has already been raised for the construction of the Men’s Service Center through Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding from Orange County and the City of Orlando.
