Hastings Introduces Resolution Recognizing America’s Homeless Veterans

-

Today, Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) introduced a resolution recognizing America’s homeless veterans (Please find attached a copy of the resolution):

Fort Lauderdale, FL – April 20,  2015 – (RealEstateRama) — “On any given night, nearly 50,000 veterans sleep in homeless shelters or on the streets.  Furthermore, approximately 260,000 veterans use homeless shelters or other services during the course of a year. These courageous men and women have stood up in defense of our freedom, and we owe them more than our gratitude – we owe them our firm commitment to ensure that they receive the care and benefits they earned through their service.

“We may all take pride and comfort in the recent finding that homelessness among veterans has begun to decrease.  One of the biggest contributors to the decreased number of homeless veterans has been the increased federal investment in efficient and effective programs.  In addition, there has been significant progress, but more must be done.  It is time that we recognize these unsung heroes who have returned from service to face hard times and homelessness. Thus, I have introduced this bipartisan resolution to pay tribute to the vast number of men and women who have served our nation in uniform.  And yet, return home from service homeless, some of whom survive war to die on the streets of this country.  To me, that is just plain wrong and must be addressed.”

Joining Hastings as original co-sponsors of the resolution are Representatives (17):  Corrine Brown (D-FL), Steve Cohen (D-TN), Judy Chu (D-CA), Al Green (D-TX), Raul M. Grijalva (D-AZ), Brian Higgins (D-NY), Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), Michael M. Honda (D-CA), Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), David W. Jolly (R-FL), James R. Langevin (D-RI), Brenda L. Lawrence (D-MI), Donald M. Payne, Jr. (D-NJ), Mark Pocan (D-WI), Charles B. Rangel (D-BY), and Adam B. Schiff (D-CA).

The resolution is also supported by the following organizations:  Veterans Matter, Give US Your Poor:  The Campaign to End Homelessness, Funders Together to End Homelessness, National Alliance to End Homelessness, The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, Major General William L. Nash (U.S. Army, Ret.), Zero: 2016, and The National Coalition for the Homeless.

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
