TAVARES – December 23, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — Gov. Rick Scott recently appointed Lake County Building Services Division Manager Shane Gerwig to the Florida Building Commission, a 26-member technical body responsible for the development, maintenance and interpretation of the Florida Building Code through a consensus-building process. Gerwig will fill a previously vacant seat for a term ending Jan. 15, 2019.

“I am honored by the governor’s appointment, and will continue focusing on education and creating appreciation for the building industry, as well as promoting a common sense approach to building codes,” said Gerwig.

Gerwig joined the Lake County Board of County Commissioners in March 2014, where his role includes managing the technical, financial, and administrative functions of the Building Services Division under the umbrella of the Economic Growth Department. He also interprets and makes determinations on building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and fire code requirements and completes inspections and plan reviews of commercial, industrial, and residential projects to assure compliance with applicable codes and standards.

“Shane has been a valuable asset to the Building Services Division through his significant contributions to improving customer service levels and ensuring a first-class experience for all users of the division’s services,” said Lake County Economic Growth Director Robert Chandler. “By sharing his extensive knowledge, Shane has been instrumental in outreach, training and streamlining the permitting process.”

Previously, Gerwig worked as a construction inspector with the city of Orlando and as lead instructor with Orange County Public Schools teaching Florida Electrical Apprenticeship and Training.

Gerwig’s appointment to the Florida Building Commission is part of 31 regulatory board appointments the governor made last week and is subject to confirmation by the Florida Senate.

Florida Building Commission members appointed by the governor represent architects, engineers, contractors, building owners, insurance, public education, local governments, building and fire officials and persons with disabilities. The commission also approves products for statewide acceptance and administers the Building Code Training Program.
