Daytona / Ormond Housing Authorities to Receive Grants for Homeless Veterans

-

Washington, DC – June 3, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Representative John L. Mica (FL-7th District) announced federal grants for the Housing Authority of Daytona Beach and the Housing Authority of Ormond Beach to aid in securing housing for homeless veterans.

Daytona Beach Housing Authority will receive $173,742 and Ormond Beach Housing Authority will receive $178,833. These funds will be provided to the Housing Authorities to provide Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) vouchers to Veterans who have been referred by the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The HUD–VASH program combines HUD Housing Choice Vouchers rental assistance for homeless veterans with case management and clinical services provided by the Veterans Affairs at its medical centers and in the community.

The housing choice voucher program is the federal government’s major program for assisting very low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. Since housing assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual, participants are able to find their own housing, including single-family homes, townhouses and apartments.

In announcing the grants Mica said, “With high Halifax area unemployment, our homeless veterans continue to be a top priority and these grants could not be better timed.
